As a Canadian, I never thought it would get to this point. I can only hope diplomacy and cooler heads will prevail in this trade war, but in the meantime, we need to support Canada and the businesses that keep our communities running. From tech startups to small family-run shops, every Canadian company we support helps strengthen our economy and maintain our independence in an unpredictable world.
I’ve always been fascinated by Canada’s natural resources, especially our mining sector. I remember taking the family north to Science North in Sudbury, exploring the Canadian Shield and learning about the incredible wealth of minerals beneath our feet. I’m still upset about the closure of the Ontario Science Centre—something I’ve already written about in “Why We Must Save The Ontario Science Centre“—but that trip to Sudbury was unforgettable. With all the resources we have, I often wonder: are we doing enough? Rare earths, natural resources, minerals—Canada has it all. At least with the Ontario Northlander train returning, we’re making progress in supporting Northern Ontario. And I still remember that stop in Midland—surprisingly enjoyable and a great midpoint break!
As trade tensions escalate, two Vancouver entrepreneurs—Toki Hossain & Sourabh Banerjee—have stepped up with digital platforms to help Canadians support local businesses. CanadianAlternative.to and IsThat.ca make it easier to discover Canadian-made products and software, giving us more ways to keep our spending local.
I’ve like to start compiling a section of Canadian businesses worth supporting on my existing links page. If you know of a great Canadian company that should be added, let me know! Send me an email at connect@iammannyj.ca, and let’s work together to highlight and support local businesses.
