IMPROVING BUS STOPS IN DURHAM REGION
Effective asset management is the cornerstone of creating a reliable and sustainable transit system. The Empowering Communities for Safer, More Reliable Bus Stops Project leverages GIS technology to document and analyze bus stop conditions, fostering collaboration between the community and transit stakeholders.
Background
Maintaining bus stops and shelters across Durham Region requires a proactive approach to asset management. Challenges such as vandalism, aging infrastructure, missing signage, and overall maintenance demand efficient solutions that can adapt to the evolving needs of transit users.
This project addresses these challenges by using GIS-based tools to document current conditions and collect citizen feedback. By creating a detailed and centralized dataset, we can provide decision-makers with actionable insights to prioritize repairs, allocate resources effectively, and improve the overall quality of bus stops and shelters.
Objectives
The primary goal is to establish a robust asset management system for transit infrastructure, supported by community-driven data collection. Key objectives include:
- Documenting the current state of bus stops and shelters using GIS tools.
- Highlighting areas in need of immediate maintenance or upgrades.
- Enabling the use of real-time dashboards and future API integrations for better decision-making.
- Building a reliable dataset to support strategic planning for transit improvements.
How the Data Collection Works
Using ArcGIS Survey123, data collection is structured to streamline the documentation process:
- Field Data Collection
- Asset Inspection: Record conditions of bus stops and shelters, including seating, lighting, and structural integrity.
- Photo Documentation: Upload images to provide detailed visual records of identified issues.
- Maintenance Tracking: Document historical repairs or planned upgrades for each asset.
- Citizen Feedback
- Mobile Reporting: A user-friendly app enables residents to report issues like vandalism, cleanliness, and damaged infrastructure.
- Categorized Submissions: Reports are organized by issue type for easy review and prioritization.
